FLAGSHIP KEYNOTE · 2026 SPECIAL

It's About The Flag

30 years ago, a team of inexperienced but fearless South Africans stood at the foot of Everest carrying a brand new flag and a mandate from Madiba. What happened next changed everything.

Leadership under pressure

Duration: 60 minutes Themes: Uncertainty - Resilience - idealism - choice - focus 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the historic 1st South African expedition to Mount Everest. May 1996 is sketched into mountaineering folklore. Two feature films and the mountaineering bestseller book Into thin Air document the catastrophic storm that claimed the lives of … climbers. As though scripted, this event occurred in the same week that South Africa signed her democratic constitution into being, declaring to the world the ideals by which the nation intended governing. Caught up in controversy within their own team - and the devastation of the storm - the inexperienced but idealistic SA mountaineers were faced with a choice. It’s about the Flag is an unmissable account of how a team grasped hold of the essentials - the mandate given to them by Madiba to plant the SA flag on the summit - and persevered. Deshun’s new keynote takes the uncertainty of that week on Everest and blends it with the idealism of the times. She compares it with the uncertainty and cynicism of today, and calls us back to focusing on what’s important: It’s about the flag.

Diversity

Duration: 45 minutes (also available in two hour workshop format) Themes: Leadership - Followership - Team dynamics - Role Definition - Diversity - Attitude In the extreme conditions on a mountain, good team dynamics and crisp decision-making is vital to success - even survival. Imprints in the Snow explores how on expeditions - and in corporate life - individuals with vastly different life-experiences, personalities and perspectives find themselves working together. Drawing on material from 15 high-altitude expeditions, Imprints examines patterns of leadership and followership. Deshun shares how strengths in one situation, become weakness in another. She enables a group to consider the role each is playing in a team, and the styles of interacting they use in pursuit of common objectives, ensuring that diversity becomes a practical strength - not a hinderance.
